Is Vastu Still Relevant in Modern Apartments?

I often get asked if Vastu is still relevant, especially by those living in modern cities.
Builders often say flats are Vastu compliant, but months later families tell me they feel stuck, work isn’t moving, and the home doesn’t feel peaceful.
That’s when I say let’s take a closer look, because Vastu isn’t about superstition – it’s about alignment, and sometimes things that look perfect on paper may not be aligned to you.
Namaskar, I am Deepak Kumar Saini, a Vastu Shastra Expert, Geopathy Expert, Vastu Consultant, Trainer & Coach.
Today I want to walk you through how I look at Vastu – from a thoughtful, practical, and personal perspective.
In this article, you will learn what modern homes often get wrong about Vastu, how small mismatches can have large effects, and finally, what I don’t recommend: copy-paste remedies.
This article won’t teach you how to do Vastu yourself, but it will help you understand why personalized Vastu matters.
Understanding Vastu Beyond Directions

Most people think Vastu is about where your room is or where your kitchen is, and yes, direction matters, but Vastu goes deeper. It’s based on the Pancha Maha Bhutas – the five elements: Prithvi (Earth), Jala (Water), Agni (Fire), Vayu (Air), and Akasha (Space).
Every part of your home is meant to balance these elements not just generally, but in a way that matches the function of that space.
When we say the northeast should be light, we are preserving the space energy of Akasha and Jala. A kitchen in the southeast represents Agni. When these are mismatched – say a toilet in the northeast or a heavy storeroom in the center – you might not feel it physically, but over time it starts showing in other ways: health, clarity, sleep, and even decision-making.
What Homeowners in Flats Get Wrong?

Let me share a few patterns I often see. Someone buys a flat only because it’s east-facing but forgets that the internal layout matters more than the main door direction, and as a result, their career feels blocked.
In apartments, it’s common to find kitchens in the northeast – that’s a water zone, not fire. But what happens then? Health issues keep repeating, especially digestive troubles, and families often tell me they’re spending endlessly on medicines without real relief.
Another common one is when the southwest corner is either missing, cut off, or used as a toilet. Southwest is a zone of stability and control. When it’s imbalanced, people living there often feel life has no anchor – careers shift suddenly, savings don’t stay, and relationships feel unsettled.
These are not random dos and don’ts. They are patterns I have seen repeatedly in consultations, and each time the family comes back to me with the same question: why are things not moving even though the house was called compliant?
But here’s the key: you won’t know what’s wrong just by googling Vastu tips because every case is unique.
Can Flats Follow Vastu?

I also come across questions like, “Can flats follow Vastu?” because people feel they live in an apartment and cannot change anything.
Is Vastu even applicable?
And the answer is yes, but with a different lens. In flats, we look at internal layout more than the tower direction – focusing on the flow of energy in key zones like the northeast, center, and southwest, as well as the placement of the kitchen, toilets, bedroom, puja room, natural light, and ventilation. Even your floor level and flat number matter in some cases.
Small changes like moving a work desk, shifting the bed, or removing certain clutter can shift energy. I’ve seen it, and my clients have felt it.
Why Generic Remedies Don’t Work?
I want to say this clearly: I don’t believe in generic Vastu remedies.
I have seen people place pyramids, hang mirrors, or keep water bowls without knowing why – and then come to me saying nothing changed. That’s because remedies aren’t props. They’re corrections.
Corrections should only be done when you understand the root imbalance.
Is Your Home Aligned With Your Life?
Here’s a reflective question: is your home aligned with your life path?
If you have been feeling emotionally drained for no reason, tired at home but fine elsewhere, or if career or studies are stagnating despite effort, it might be your space.
On the other hand, I have seen people in an average dasha but living in a calm, balanced space. They often say, “I’m able to think clearly, I can take decisions better, and things feel lighter.”
That’s the power of alignment. So, Vastu isn’t about blindly following tips or doing cosmetic fixes.
You don’t need to become a Vastu expert. Whether it’s a simple change like realigning your desk or a more significant correction, the goal is always the same: to create a space that truly supports you.
Vastu is not about fear – it’s about flow. And when the house supports the person, the person grows.
